Joan Wyand is an artist, activist and teacher. Her work confronts setter colonial systemic harm and calls for change through participatory acknowledgement. Her work gouges into our socialized complacency and creates space for critical conversations and collective envisioning. Her perspective is influenced by Black Social Theorists including bell hooks and James Baldwin who have been identifying systemic injustice since the 1960’s and calling for change that has yet to be realized. These systems have caused life-threatening geological impacts on the earth that are rapidly intensifying. Urgent and drastic systemic change is required for humanity’s survival. We must establish different ways to relate to each other and the earth and harness our collective power to define new systems of care. Joan believes creative engagement is a tool to realize this shift in culture and consciousness.
